Bridging­help for students as of now

As of Tuesday, 16. June 2020, at 12:00 students can submit the application for the long-planned bridging assistance. This was announced by Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek on Monday, 15. June at a press conference on. Then, students who are in financial need due to Corona and can prove it, should receive a grant of up to 500 euros per month for the months of June to August. The money does not have to be repaid. 100 million euros are available for this purpose, according to Karliczek. Thought the money is for students who are not BAfoG eligible. All domestic and foreign students at state and state-recognized universities in Germany are eligible to apply, regardless of age or number of semesters, she said.

"The grants, which can now be applied for online and are then processed by local student services offices, are […] part of an overall package. A package to support young people at colleges and universities in the corona crisis, and quite regardless of country of origin, age or even number of semesters," explained Karliczek at the press conference. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) also assures on the information overview about the bridging aid that the application of the grants is also possible by students with a scholarship or a loan, provided that the financial need still exists. In connection with BAfoG, Karliczek clarifies that far-reaching adjustments have already been made for it. The bridging assistance is the second column of the support package, which is to help "fast and unbureaucratically those, which have evenly no requirement on BAfoG."

The bridging allowance does not have to be paid back, but you have to apply for it again for each month. It can range from 100 to 500 euros, depending on personal account balance. The application is made via this nationwide standardized online procedure from the BMBF. The application will then be processed further by the locally responsible student services organizations. Since the online portal for application processing, according to the press release of the Studierendenwerk Hamburg of 15. June is still being programmed at the time the application is first received, however, can only be paid out from 25. June a disbursement can be arranged.
