Hurray, finally summer holidays! Many Germans use the car for the journey this year. That should be before the departure but better once in the inspection – not that you break down on the way.
According to a recent survey, more than half of Germany's citizens plan to go on vacation this year by car, motor home or caravan. So that it is not already over before it has really begun, you should examine the car carefully beforehand. Who does not trust himself, brings the car to the inspection to be on the safe side.
Pay attention to the tires during the inspection
It should be quite easy to check and increase the tire pressure at a gas station. Here, the heavier the car is, the higher the tire pressure must be. The recommended pressure is usually written in the fuel cap, on the inside of the driver's door, in the manual or in a manufacturer's overview – for example on the Internet.
But already with the question whether the profile of the tires is still sufficient, some could fail. Experts advise a trick: If you put a euro coin in the large tread grooves in the middle of the tire, the golden edge must clearly disappear in the tire. Then the profile is not yet too much worn down.
Check brakes and lights
Brakes are also important. React immediately when you step on the brake pedal? If you don't hear squealing or other strange noises when you brake, that's also a good sign. Also, check your records: when was the last time the brake fluid was changed? ADAC advises getting this done every two years.
Also, check all the lights by asking your partner or someone you know to walk around the car while you activate all the lights once: Is the turn signal on? Do the front and rear headlights work? What about the reversing light, brake light as well as the fog lights? Remember that a heavy load may cause the front headlights to be set too high and then blind oncoming traffic. You may need to adjust it down a bit.
Oil, coolant and wiper water
Quite easily, you can also check the level of engine oil and coolant, and top up the fluids as needed. It's also important to make sure you have good visibility while driving. This is why you should fill up your mop-up water before you leave home. Do windshield wipers leave marks on the windshield? If so, it may be time to change your wiper blades.
The TuV association has listed other points for a hazard-free vacation drive. At ADAC, there is also more detailed information on how to pack your car most safely.
