Origin

The Bachelor/Master system

Through the Bologna Process in 1999, the previous university degrees such as Diplom, Staatsexamen or Magister were replaced by a two-tier education system – Bachelor and Master – and harmonized throughout Europe by a declaration of 29 European education ministries. As a result, the university degrees are internationally recognized, comparable throughout Europe and also enable more flexible study arrangements, for example through semesters abroad or international internships.

With the replacement of the previous degree programs (Diplom, Magister and Staatsexamen) and the changeover to the tiered Bachelor-Master degree structure, the previous course contents have been replaced by modules, i.e. clearly defined subject areas. The modularization is also the basis for the ECTS system (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which makes it possible to evaluate the work performed in the course of study uniformly throughout Europe and, if necessary, to credit it as prior work for subsequent qualifications.

Within the module system, a distinction is made between compulsory, compulsory elective and elective modules, which ensure a close link between theory and practice :

  • Compulsory modules must be taken during the course of study.
  • In the case of elective modules, you can choose a predetermined number of modules within a subject area.
  • Elective modules are freely selectable.

Modules such as internships, projects or seminars are usually not bound to semester periods and provide students with the knowledge necessary for the respective subject focus.

In the course of the Bachelor's program, the technical knowledge acquired in the modules, necessary key qualifications as well as methodological and application competencies are tested and evaluated.

Requirements

for the Bachelor program

Due to the educational sovereignty of the German states, the admission requirements for a Bachelor's degree vary from state to state in Germany, but also from state to state throughout Europe.

As a rule, the Abitur (general university entrance qualification) or an equivalent foreign qualification is considered as a university entrance qualification. Vocationally qualified students are also admitted to a Bachelor's degree program if they have completed vocational training and have many years of and/or relevant work experience in the profession for which they were trained or in a similar field of activity. A successful master's examination in combination with practical experience (z. B. Industrial Master) qualifies you to participate in a subject-related Bachelor's degree program.

Thematically very specialized Bachelor's degree programs may require a preparatory internship, which you can complete in almost any company or institution that is relevant to your field of study.

Admission to a Bachelor's degree program is usually possible without NC (numerus clausus), which is a significant advantage over face-to-face studies.

In Germany, it is currently only possible in exceptional cases to obtain a bachelor's degree without an Abitur or prior professional qualification. In other European countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Open University, founded in 1969 and the largest state university in the UK and in Europe, offers the opportunity to study most university undergraduate courses by distance learning, without the need for A-levels or special language skills.

Bachelor in distance learning

Does it exist?

You can also achieve a recognized bachelor's degree with a distance learning program. So if you do not want to attend a "regular" university, for whatever reason, or if you want to qualify while working, you have the option of earning a bachelor's degree through distance learning.

Primarily the offer of the colleges, universities and distance learning colleges is aimed at employed persons, but can also be taken up by any other prospective student.

Recognition

With the bachelor's degree, you acquire a first academic degree that is recognized as an equivalent professional qualification compared to attendance universities. With a successful bachelor's degree, you can apply for a whole range of job opportunities. In most cases, as a trainee (university graduate) you will be trained in the company processes and can gradually familiarize yourself with the actual field of activity.

For many professional fields of application, the bachelor's degree is a sufficient qualification for entry, although the master's degree as a higher academic qualification is a desirable goal in professional life and could be required anyway due to increasing professional demands.

If you earn your bachelor's degree through distance learning, a high degree of independence, motivation, determination, and time management skills are required. All these competencies, which we associate with distance learning students, are in great demand by companies and institutions and make it easier for you to enter new professional fields.

Students, on the other hand, who switch to distance learning directly after graduating from high school, just to avoid having to go to college every day, will tend to give the opposite impression, although even in these cases there may be weighty reasons that make face-to-face study impossible.
